Det händer ganska ofta att fåglar flyger in i vårt stora vardagsrumsfönster och ibland flyger de så hårt in i fönstret att de skadar sig. Det hände med denna lilla fågel. Den fick vila ett tag i soffan och plötsligt kunde den flyga därifrån igen alldeles själv.
It happens quite often that birds fly into our large living room window and sometimes they fly into the window so hard that they hurt themselves. That happened to this little bird. It was allowed to rest for a while on the sofa and suddenly it was able to fly away again all by itself.
Vi lade en filt över fågeln så att den skulle hålla sig varm och det verkar ha fungerat för snart hade den blivit så pass bra att den kunde flyga därifrån för egen maskin. We put a blanket over the bird to keep it warm and it seems to have worked because soon it had become so well that it could fly away on its own.
Kylan kommer krypande och vi ville inte ha det som förra hösten och vintern när vi av olika skäl inte fick de olika sakerna på altanen på plats i tid. Så vi tog en dag för att ställa vinterordna altanen. En skillnad från tidigare är att vi har en gasolgrill numera som är mycket större än den gamla kolgrillen, plus att den förstås är mycket känsligare för snö och väta. Vi hoppas att vi har lyckats slå in den tillräckligt så att den inte rostar. Den gjorde också att vi fick skapa en helt ny plan för att placera sakerna. Det blev ganska bra till sist, tycker vi. The cold is creeping in and we didn’t want it to be like last autumn and winter when, for different reasons, we didn‘t get the various things on the balcony in place in time. So we took a day to arrange the balcony for the winter. One difference from before is that we now have a gas grill which is much larger than the old charcoal grill, plus it is of course much more sensitive to snow and wetness. We hope we’ve managed to wrap it up enough so it doesn’t rust. It also meant that we had to create a completely new plan for placing things. It turned out pretty well in the end, we think. Vi ställde den nya stora grillen alldeles till höger om dörren ut på altanen, inslagen eftersom det är en gasolgrill. Den gamla kolgrillen som vi hade förr fick bara stå som den var. Det börjar bli kallt ute, så alla våra palettblad och de få pelargoner vi har måste få komma inomhus. Allt får inte plats så vi har gett bort en del. Trots det har vi fönstren fulla med blommor nu. Nästa år får de flytta ut igen.
It’s getting cold outside, so all our coleus and the few geraniums we have need to come indoors. There isn’t room for all of them, so we’ve given some away. Even so, we have the windows full of flowers now. Next year they can move out again.
Först kom palettbladen in i stora krukor tillsammans med några till stora växter. De tog väldigt mycket plats. First, the coleus went into large pots along with some more large plants. They took up a lot of space.Som sagt de tar väldigt mycket plats. Och ännu mer plats tar krukan med ros och silverek. As said, they take up a lot of space. And even more space is taken up by the pot with rose and silver oak.Så vi tänkte ändrade oss och tog mest sticklingar i stället i mindre krukor som får plats i fönstren. So we changed our mind and took mostly cuttings instead in smaller pots that fit in the windows.Till sist blev det 18 krukor med 3–4 sticklingar i varje, plus en stor kruka med växten som den är. Sigge bestämde sig för att göra ett nytt, stort och stadigt fågelbord istället för de två små vi har haft tidigare. Detta skulle förses med tak och vägg för att skydda fröna från snö och blåst. Och så klart bli snyggare att se på.
Sigge decided to make a new, large and sturdy bird table instead of the two small ones we have had before. This one would be provided with a roof and wall to protect the seeds from snow and wind. And of course become prettier to look at.

Vi trodde inte att det skulle bli så ymnig växtlighet på altanen i år, eftersom vi inte kunde handla blommor när vi brukar på grund av covid. Men det är nästan som vanligt – förutom att vi inte har riggat en del saker och att blomlådorna har lite annorlunda utseende, mest det som man brukar betrakta som inomhusplantor. Nu är vårt största bekymmer hur vi ska få plats med alla palettblad och pelargoner när det blir dags att ta in dem.
We didn’t think there would be such an abundance of vegetation on the balcony this year, because we couldn’t buy flowers when we usually do because of covid. But it’s almost as usual – except that we haven’t rigged some things and that the flower boxes have a slightly different look, mostly what you usually consider indoor plants. Now our biggest concern is how we will fit all the coleus and geraniums when it’s time to bring them inside.

Våra grannar – Tychos ägare – kom på ett spontant besök en afton tillsammans med sina barn Idun och Vidar. Vi var ute på altanen och pratade mest. Idun ritade av sitt värdpar, se teckningen nedan.
Our neighbors – Tycho’s owners – came for a spontaneous visit one evening with their children Idun and Vidar. We were out on the balcony and mostly talked. Idun drew her host couple, see the drawing below.
Idun, liksom alla andra barn, måste förstås gunga i vår snurrstol på altanen. Mamma Mikaela får uppdraget att snurra stolen. Pappa Johannes pratar mest med Sigge. Idun, like all other children, must of course rock in our swivel chair on the balcony. Mom Mikaela is given the task of spinning the chair. Dad Johannes talks mostly to Sigge.Med besökare i Iduns och Vidars ålder är Duplolådan en given succé. Mickan verkar också tycka det är roligt. Vanliga år brukar vi omkring eller strax efter midsommar åka och köpa massor med plantor för att ha ute på altanen. I år blev det inte så, en coronaeffekt. Med smitta i kroppen ger man sig inte ut och handlar. Nödlösningen blev att flytta ut alla våra palettblad. Numera har vi fler sådana än pelargoner, eftersom vi har haft otur med skadedjur som dödat många av pelargonplantorna. Konstaterat smittfria hann vi i alla fall åka och skaffa lite tagetes och petunior, så det är inte helt enhanda i blomlådorna.
In normal years, around or just after midsummer we usually go and buy lots of plants to have out on the balcony. This year it didn’t turn out like that, a corona effect. With an infection in the body, you don’t go out and shop. The emergency solution was to move all our painted nettles out. Nowadays we have more of these than geraniums, as we have had bad luck with vermins that killed many of the geranium plants. Having been found to be infection-free, we at least had time to go and get some tagetes and petunias, so it isn’t all one thing in the flower boxes.

Nu börjar det bli kallt om nätterna och så vi tog in de växter som är mindre tåliga mot köld. Som vanligt var det lite för mycket som inte mognat färdigt, och det är trist att bara slänga dem.
Now it starts to get cold at night and so we brought in the plants that are less resistant to cold. As usual, it was a little too much that had not matured completely, and it’s sad to just throw them away.
Just den här har inte fattat att den snart kommer att frysa ihjäl, men det är ju bara trevligt. Den får stanna ute tills den inte klarar mer. This one has not figured out that it will soon freeze to death, but that’s just nice. Till sist och äntligen har vi ordnat till altanen så den nästan ser ut som den brukar på sommaren. Lite färre blommor än vanligt, men det får vi stå ut med. Vi hoppas att våra pelargoner ska frodas och fylla ut tomrummen.
Finally and at last, we have arranged the terrace so it almost looks like it usually does in the summer. A little less flowers than usual, but we have to stand that. We hope that our geraniums will flourish and fill the gaps.

Our nice syrup jars remain.Så blev det i år. Lite glesare men rätt ok. En del kommer säkert att fyllas på eller flyttas innan vi är helt nöjda. This is how it turned out this year. A little sparse but quite ok. Some will certainly be replenished or moved before we are completely satisfied.
Vi skaffade oss ett plastväxthus förra året och det fungerade hur bra som helst. Nu var det dags att ställa upp det igen för att ge blommorna chans att acklimatisera sig till utomhusklimatet. Med det jättefina väder vi har haft ett tag så skulle de förmodligen klara sig ändå, men för att vara på den säkra sidan satte vi upp det.
We got a plastic greenhouse last year and it worked just fine. Now it was time to set it up again to give the flowers a chance to acclimatize to the outdoor climate. With the great weather we’ve had for a while, they would probably be ok anyway, but to be on the safe side, we set it up.
Nu har vi fått upp växthuset igen, och tänkte att blommorna skulle få vänja sig att vara ute. De verkar trivas hur bra som helst. Snart ska de planteras om i andra kärl. Now we have put up the greenhouse again, and thought that the flowers would get used to being outside. They seem to thrive no matter what. Soon they will be replanted in other vessels.Ett annat pågående projekt är granskottssirap. Vi var ute och hämtade massor med granskott under helgen och nu ligger de i socker. Ett bra tips vi fick var att ställa burkarna i solen – det går jättemycket fortare än förra året. Another ongoing project is spruce shoot syrup. We were out picking lots of spruce shoots over the weekend and now they are in sugar. A good tip we got was to put the jars in the sun – it goes much faster than last year.
